The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games was the largest sporting event to be staged in Australia this decade. The solution was successfully delivered on time and budget meeting the requirements of the GC2018 Corporation, with no compromise of perimeter protection throughout the event period.

The challenge

With the world’s eyes on Australia, the safety and security of athletes, officials and spectators was paramount. A Vehicle Barrier System was requested for use in stopping cars, vans and light trucks across over 20 venues as follows:

  • Crash tested under specific conditions.
  • Effective in stopping vehicles.
  • Easy installation in less than one hour.
  • Total weight of less than 30kg per section.
  • Highly portable and mobile: Man Portable.
  • Ability to open and close within 3 – 12 seconds.
  • Training and 24/7 support to security team.

The solution

After a careful selection process, Protective Barriers Australia was chosen to provide the Modular Vehicle Barrier system to meet the needs of the GC2018 Corporation security plan. Working closely with the Senior Project Officer of Security and Infrastructure to further understand the requirement, the following solution was delivered:

  • Input to perimeter protection planning.
  • 890 Modular Vehicle Barriers.
  • 10 Wedge Barriers.
  • Training for onsite security team.
  • 24/7 technical support throughout the event.

“We chose the Modular Vehicle Barrier after a careful selection process. We used the system to support perimeter security and protection in areas we had concerns that vehicles may unwittingly drive into. It’s highly deployable and easy to assemble which was key for us as a lot of our setups were happening at night. The team at Protective Barriers Australia were good to work with. We sought their advice on what we wanted to achieve and they delivered an ideal solution that fitted our security solution, and fitted it well.”

“The work ethic and quality of planning was exemplary. I have no hesitation in recommending Protective Barriers Australia as a reliable and committed delivery partner to any organisation that identifies a requirement for portable vehicle mitigations”.
